How to Install Racing Harnesses

So, you’ve just bought a brand-new set of racing harness and you’re ready to take your car game to the next level.

Congratulations!

But, as you stare at the tangled mess of straps and buckles in front of you, you might start to feel a bit overwhelmed. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Remember, these harnesses are intended for the racetrack, so speedy installation is a must!

In this guide, we’re going to walk you through the process of installing your new harness in just five minutes.

That’s right, you heard us, FIVE MINUTES.

Step 1: Fight the Right Spot to Mount Them

The first thing you need to do is find the right spot to mount your harness. Look for a location that will provide optimal support and safety. Most commonly, harnesses are mounted to the factory seat belt points or the roll cage of your car.

Make sure you have all the hardware you need and that the mounting point is secure before moving on to the next step. Lap belts need to either be bolted to a tab or secured to an eye bolt. Shoulder straps can be attached in the same way or wrapped around a roll bar. See the instructions included with your harness for complete details on strap direction and proper locations.

Step 2: Adjust the Length of Your Harnesses

Next, adjust the length of the straps to fit your body. This is an important step, as a properly adjusted harness can be the difference between life and death in the event of an accident. You’ll want the lap belts to be snug, but not too tight, and the shoulder straps to be adjusted to the appropriate length for the specific occupant. Pay special attention to the angle of the shoulder straps from the mounting point to where they rest on the shoulders. Rule of thumb is 10 degrees up or down is safe and the strap should not be redirected in any way by the harness openings or top of your seat.

Once you’ve got the length just right, you’re ready to move on to the next step

Step 3: Buckle Up, Buttercup!

This is where things start to get real. Make sure all the buckles are properly inserted and fastened. The harness should feel snug, but not uncomfortable.

You don’t want it to be so tight that it restricts your breathing or movement, but you also don’t want any slack that could compromise your safety.

Step 4: Adjust Your Belt Tension

Once you’re buckled in, it’s time to adjust the tension. You’ll want to tighten up the lap belts first, then move on to the shoulder straps. Remember, the goal is to have a snug fit without feeling like you’re being squeezed to death. Your lap belts should be resting across the crest of your hips and your shoulder belts should run from your shoulders directly to the mounting point without interruption. If you’re using a 5th point, it should be snug and angled towards the rear of the seat. Again, refer to the included instructions from complete details.

Once you’ve got everything adjusted to your liking, double-check that all the buckles are secure and that there’s no excess slack.

Step 5: Go for a Spin in Your New Harnesses

You’re all done!

It’s time to take your newly installed race harness for a spin. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to get used to the feeling of being strapped in. You should notice a huge improvement in your car’s handling and stability. Plus, you’ll look like a total boss with your new Status Racing harness.
